Capoeira is a Martial art that is disguised as a dance and a game. It was created by Africans largely from Angola West Africa along with natives of Brazil - which is located in South America - who they were enslaved with by the Portuguese during colonization there in the 17th century. Although capoeira is beautiful and fun to watch as well as participate in, it is a highly effective martial art to the point that it was used by these African and Native Brazilian slaves to successfully revolt against their oppressors and regain their freedom. Capoeira has been practiced in many countries around the world and is gaining popularity. While still new in the U.S. (about 50 years), getting its start in California and then in New York City, capoeira is growing and practitioners are enjoying this art in many states, and cities all over the country. This Martial Art includes elements of music, dance, acrobatics, and of course self-defense.
